The Donkey Breed Society is the British Society for everyone whose love and interest is in the donkey.
Founded in 1967, the Donkey Breed Society seeks to encourage a fuller and more active life for those donkeys who are much loved family pets or companions to other animals.
Members believe that a donkey is not just an ornament for your paddock and that a busy donkey is invariably a happier donkey.
The society is a registered national charity, is affiliated to the British Driving Society (BDS), a member of the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) and is an official Equine Passport Issuing Organisation (PIO) approved by DEFRA. The Society also administers the British Stud Book which has been granted official mother stud book status by DEFRA for all donkeys in Europe.
There is a network of members and contacts across the UK, and members receive a magazine and three newsletters per year.
Inhand and driving shows are held across the country, either as part of affiliated agricultural or County shows or as donkey-only events. Seminars, training days and workshops are held as well as walks, picnics and pleasure drives. If you can do it with a donkey, we probably do!
The Society also has a well-stocked online shop, and this is a particularly useful place to buy books relating to donkey specific care and welfare.
